Is Simple Gutter Cleaning a cleaning company?
No. We are an independent guide for homeowners. We do not clean gutters or sell gutter products, and we are not paid by any gutter company.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least twice a year for most homes - late spring and late autumn - and more often under tall trees. See our full guide on how often to clean gutters.
How much does gutter cleaning cost?
Industry pricing guides show about $100 to $180 for a typical single-storey home and about $150 to $275 for two storeys. Local quotes vary.

What happens if I never clean my gutters?
Water overflows, which can stain walls, rot fascia boards, damage landscaping and add to damp basements and ice build-up.
Do gutter guards mean no more cleaning?
No. They reduce cleaning, often to about once a year, but fine debris still builds up.
Where do your prices come from?
From published pricing guides by home-service companies. We show them as ranges because real prices depend on your home and your area.
Gutter Cleaning Cost: What to Expect in 2026

Not always. Ask whether flushing and testing the downspouts is included, and get it written on the quote.

How to Clean Gutters Safely: A Step-by-Step Guide
Can I clean gutters without a ladder?
Yes, for single-storey homes. Telescopic gutter wands, hose attachments and gutter vacuums let you clean from the ground. They work best on loose, dry debris.
What is the easiest way to clean gutters?
On a low home, the easiest way is to scoop the debris out by hand from a ladder, then flush with a hose. From the ground, a leaf-blower gutter kit or a wet-dry vacuum kit is easiest for dry leaves.
Should gutters be cleaned wet or dry?
Dry is lighter and cleaner to handle, and a dry ground is safer for the ladder. Very wet sludge may need scooping rather than blowing.
Where do I put the gutter debris?
Leaves and twigs can usually go in garden waste or compost. Sludge with shingle grit is better in general waste.
How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?
Is once a year enough for gutter cleaning?
It can be for homes with no trees nearby or with good gutter guards. Most homes do better with two cleanings a year.
What month is best to clean gutters?
Late spring (around May or June) and late autumn (around November) suit most US homes. Adjust to when your trees drop leaves.
How often should I clean gutters with gutter guards?
Check and clean at least once a year. Guards reduce debris but do not stop it completely.
Do I need to clean gutters in winter?
Only if they clogged after your autumn clean. Avoid ladder work on ice or snow; call a pro if gutters overflow in winter.
7 Signs of Clogged Gutters (and What to Do)
How do I know if my downspout is clogged?
Run a hose into the gutter near the downspout. If water backs up in the gutter or only trickles out of the bottom, the downspout is blocked.
Why is my gutter overflowing at the corner?
Usually a clog at the corner or in the nearest downspout. If the gutter is clean and still overflows in heavy rain, it may be too small or need an extra downspout.
Can clogged gutters damage my roof?
They can. Water that backs up can soak the roof edge and the wooden fascia behind the gutter, and add to ice build-up in winter.
Can clogged gutters cause a leaky basement?
They can add to it. Overflowing water falls next to the foundation, and soaked soil there is a common cause of damp basements.
How to Unclog a Downspout: 4 Easy Methods
Can I use a pressure washer to unclog a downspout?
From the ground it can help, but never use one from a ladder. A garden hose or a plumber's snake is safer and usually enough.
How do I unclog a downspout without a ladder?
Flush it from the bottom with a hose, use a snake from the bottom, or take off the lower elbow to clear it by hand.
What causes downspouts to clog?
Leaves, twigs, pine needles, seed pods and shingle grit, often packed together at the opening or in the bends.
Should downspouts drain into the ground?
They can drain into an underground pipe, but those pipes clog and are hard to check. Draining onto the surface well away from the house is simpler where space allows.
Gutter Guards: Types, Costs and Do They Work?
Do you still need to clean gutters with gutter guards?
Yes, but less often. Check and clean them about once a year, and rinse the top of mesh guards if debris sits on them.
What is the best type of gutter guard?
Fine micro-mesh handles the widest range of debris, including pine needles. Reverse-curve guards suit heavy leaf fall if fitted correctly.
Can I install gutter guards myself?
Screen, foam and brush guards are easy DIY on a single-storey home. Micro-mesh and reverse-curve systems are usually fitted by pros.
Do gutter guards cause ice dams?
Guards do not cause ice dams on their own; ice dams form when roof snow melts and refreezes at the edge. Some guards can hold snow and ice on top, so check them in winter.
Gutter Cleaning Tools: Clean From the Ground
What is the best tool to clean gutters from the ground?
For dry leaves, a leaf-blower gutter kit or a wet-dry vacuum kit. For flushing, a curved gutter wand on a hose.
Do gutter cleaning wands work?
They work well for loose debris and flushing. Packed, wet debris may need scooping by hand.
Can a shop vac clean gutters?
Yes, with an extension kit and curved nozzle made for gutters. It works best on dry leaves.
Can I clean two-storey gutters from the ground?
Some long vacuum kits reach two storeys for light debris. For heavy clogs on tall homes, a professional is safer.
