Ladder Safety for Gutter Cleaning: Simple Rules

Updated 16 October 2026 · Independent homeowner guide

Falls from ladders are a common cause of injuries at home, even from low heights. A few simple habits make gutter cleaning much safer. These tips follow guidance from OSHA and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

Choose the right ladder

  • Use a ladder tall enough that you never stand on the top two steps of a step ladder or the top three rungs of an extension ladder.
  • Check the duty rating covers your weight plus tools.
  • Inspect it first: no cracks, bent rails, loose rungs or missing feet.
  • Use a fibreglass ladder near any electrical wires - but better, stay well away from power lines.

Set it up correctly

  • Firm, level ground. Never on boxes, bricks or a slope without proper levellers.
  • The 4-to-1 rule: for every 4 feet of height, the base sits 1 foot out from the wall.
  • To step onto a roof, the ladder should extend about 3 feet above the roof edge.
  • Do not lean the ladder on the gutter itself - a stand-off stabiliser protects the gutter and steadies the ladder.

Climb and work safely

  • Keep three points of contact: two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand.
  • Face the ladder and keep your belt buckle between the rails.
  • Move the ladder instead of reaching to the side.
  • Carry tools in a belt or a hook-on bucket, not in your hands.
  • Have someone at home, and ideally holding the ladder.

When to stay off the ladder

Skip ladder work in wind, rain, ice or after dark, if you feel dizzy or take medicine that affects balance, and on homes of two or more storeys unless you are experienced. Use tools that work from the ground or hire a pro (what to ask).

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4-to-1 ladder rule?

For every 4 feet of ladder height to the top support, place the base 1 foot away from the wall. It gives a safe angle of about 75 degrees.

How high should a ladder be above a roof?

About 3 feet above the roof edge if you need to step onto the roof.

Is it safe to lean a ladder on the gutter?

It is better not to. Gutters can bend or break. Use a ladder stand-off that rests on the roof or wall instead.

What does three points of contact mean?

Always keep either two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand, on the ladder while you climb.
